Liposuction has been around since the 1970s and patients have used post-surgery compression garments before, but scientific studies have only recently documented the benefits of compression garments to patients after liposuction.
A clinical research project and international presentations in the United States, Canada, Israel, Panama and Malaysia compared the results of two groups of liposuction patients asked to wear two kinds of full body compression garments after the procedure. Researchers evaluated their experiences and results using five-point scales to determine if the type of garment affected the patients’ comfort and recovery after surgery.
Developed from technological advances in textiles, modern medical compression garments have maximized healing, surgical results and patient comfort during the recovery from liposuction, according to the study.
Dr. Paul Fortes performs liposuctions at Houston’s Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery and praises the benefits of using compression garments after surgery.
“Aesthetic surgery, including liposuction surgery, will continue to be performed by well-trained and experienced plastic surgeons and requested by their patients because of the physical and psychological benefits that it brings,” Fortes told News Day. “To be human means that we will always be affected by the way we look and the way we feel about ourselves. Aesthetic surgery affects both body and mind. When we look our best we tend to feel our best, and vice versa.
“Aesthetic surgeons are the specialists of their field. They are the ones who produce advances and who are most capable of scrutinizing the safety and efficacy of new developments in aesthetic surgery. As an aesthetic plastic surgeon, I always look forward to seeing the transforming effects that aesthetic surgery has on the lives of my patients. Its personal rewards to me are immeasurable.”
Fortes and his professional staff at Houston’s Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery are dedicated to providing exceptional personal service, commitment to safety, patient confidentiality and superior results.
Board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, Fortes had one of the most extensive training periods of eight years in surgical residency, including three years of specialization in plastic surgery at Chicago’s Northwestern Medical Center.
